To an old picture

In the green landscape of a blossoming summer,
Beside cool water, reeds, and canes,
Behold, how the sinless child
Plays freely on the virgin's knee.
And there, in the woods, blissfully,
Alas, growing already is the stem that will become the cross

어느 古畵 앞에서

꽃피는 여름의 초록 풍경 속,
시원한 물가에는, 갈대와 대나무들
보라, 죄 없는 아이가
처녀의 무릎에서 얼마나 행복하게,
그리고 거기 숲속에서 유쾌하게 노는 지를.

"Symphonie Espagnole"로 우리에게 알려져있는 Edouard Lalo는
2편의 오페라, Fiesque와 Le Roi d'Ys를 남겼다.

Fiesque는 무대에 올려지지 않은 실패작이지만 Le Roi d'Ys는
최소한 불란서 내에서는 가끔 공연되는 오페라라 한다.
 

오페라는 한 남자, Mylio를 사랑하는 두 자매, Margarad와 Rozenn의
얘기를 담고있다.  오페라의 스토리 전개가 의례 그렇듯이 둘은 서로가
자매의 관계임을 알지 못하여 더욱 복잡하게 진행된다. 
결국은 Rozenne과 Mylio는 결혼, 그리고 Margarad의 죽음으로 끝 맺는다.

"Vainement, ma bien-aimee"는 popular한 곡으로 여러 테너들의 다른
버젼으로 들을 수 있다.
